Obituary of Elder Wilson William Thompson:
BROTHER BEEBE-It becomes my painful duty to inform you and the household of faith, through your medium of correspondence, of the death of one of Zion’s old and faithful watchmen, ELDER WILSON THOMPSON, who fell asleep in Jesus May 1st, 1866. He was born August 17, 1788, in Kentucky, and at the early age of thirteen was circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, receiving the spirit of adoption, whereby he could cry, Abba, Father, and was baptized by Elder James Lee. At the age of 22 he began his public career as a minister of the gospel and for 56 years devotedly giving himself wholly to this work of the ministry, as thousands who have sat under his ministry, growing in grace and in the knowledge of the truth, can testify. A kidney disease growing upon him seemed to impress his mind sensibly with approaching death for some months, but with a remarkable constitution and strength of lungs, and zeal unabated, he continued to preach Christ and him crucified, until about one week before he died. His last labors was with the Antioch and Ross Run churches, Wabash Co., Ind, where it pleased the good Lord to pour out his spirit, additions were made to the church, and he seemed to almost forget his infirmity, with the joy and praise that filled his soul on seeing the salvation of the Lord. He was taken down away from home, but by medical assistance was partially relieved, so as to get to his son, James Thompson, in Howard county. He spoke of his disease, his worldly affairs, and approaching death with the utmost composure and resignation to the Lord’s will. His physician expressed some surprise at his strong faith and confident assurance in God, his Savior. He replied, “My God never changes.” About 18 hours before he died he aroused in severe convulsions, for about half an hour suffering intensely, he cried out, “O Lord, I pray, I pray,” and fell asleep, from which no groan, or sigh, or conscious suffering escaped till his breath left him. Truly one of the mighty in Israel has fallen. He leaves a frail companion, nine months younger than himself. May God support her in this sad hour till it is his will to take her to his embrace. An appropriate discourse was delivered by Elder J. G. Jackson from the words, “Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; yea, saith the spirit, for they rest from their labors, and their works do follow them.” After which the remains were deposited in the graveyard at Russiaville, Howard County, Indiana.

Review of Joseph Thompson-Greater Terre Haute and Vigo County-C.C.
Oakley,1908-pp. 819-820.
Joseph Thompson is one of Prairie Creek Township’s most active business
men, prominently identified with its farming and milling interests, and his
home is in Middletown. For twenty six years he has been actively connected
with industrial life, first operating a saw mill for eight years, during a similar
period bought and sold stock, shipping principally to Indianapolis and since
1897 has been the proprietor of a flouring mill.
Mr. Thompson was born in Sullivan county, Indiana, May 19, 1849, a son of
Joseph Sr., and Nancy H. (Yeager) Thompson. For many years Joseph Thompson
Sr., was prominent in the business ofe of Sullivan county, following agricultural
pursuits and his death occurred January 22, 1849, four months before the birth of
his son and namesake. Mrs. Thompson, born in 1815, survived her husband many
years and died in May 1900. She was but four years old when her parents came
to Terre Haute and she could recall to mind when that now populous city was a
little hamlet of four or five houses. After her husband’s death she carried on their
little farm of eighty acres and made a home for her children, nine in number,
namely, Clarissa, deceased; James, who married Julia Cuppy and resides in
Sullivan county; Eliza, the wife of John P. Harris, a retired farmer in Nebraska,
who married Eliza McKinney and resides in Kansas, Nancy and Mary, both
deceased, Martha A., the wife of James H. Harris of Nebraska, and Joseph
the subject of this review.
Joseph Thompson remained at home with his mother until his marriage and
afterward for three years she lived with him, her death occurring at his home.
Although in the meantime she had lived with her other children. In 1878,
three years after his marriage, he located on his farm of fifty-five acres in
Linton township, and he lived there until his removal to Middletown in 1898.
His farm now contains two-hundred acres, and since 1897 he has operated a
Flouring mill in connection with his general farming, selling his product
principally at wholesale. He is also active in the public life of his community
the encampment of Odd Fellows. He has filled all the offices in his lodge
at Indianapolis.
On the 11th of February, 1875, Mr. Thompson was united in marriage to
Susan F. Gaskin, who was born May 1, 1854, a daughter of Stephen and

thirteen months; Clement H. born March 3, 1878, married Early Ring and
lives in Middletown; Lula E., born April 19, 1882, is the wife of Joseph
Bailey of Linton township; John C., born August 12, 1882; Nola N., born
August 5, 1884; and Trillie Lester, born April 15 1891, are all at home

Notes: From a newspaper article-Looking Back at the Week Ahead….50 years ago:
The body of John Thompson was discovered lying face down on the banks
of a small stream about 1-1/4 mile east of Prairie Creek. John Patton and
Tom Sullivan, two area youths, discovered the body and reported it to the
Police.
Vigo County Coroner, Dr. R. C. VanArsdale, was called to the scene to
investigate.
According to information gathered by the investigating officers, Thompson
had gone to Prairie Creek about a week earlier and had not been seen or
heard from since. Thompson reportedly left the Prairie Creek pool room
with two other men, who had said they were going to come to Terre Haute.
Examination of Thompson’s body by the coroner revealed a deep cut on
the top of this head, a fratured skull and a broken neck.
VanArsdale said it would have been almost impossible for Thompson to
have sustained the injuries in a fall. There were indications from the
investigating officers that Thompson was killed in another location and
his body placed by the stream.
Thompson’s hat was found lying near the body. Across the hat was a
bloody handkerchief. Although no money was found in his billfold,
aquaintances expressed the fact Thompson had carried a large sum of
money on his person when he left his home.

Grandma Thompson:
A large funeral party came up from Kelly on Saturday to bury the remains of
Grandma Thompson, so long one of the favorite residents of that place. She
was the widow of the late John Thompson, who died in 1868 at the age of
sixy-four years. Grandma Thompson would have been ninety-three years
old had she lived but death called her one day before her birthday. Three
years ago the friends and neighbors in Kelly surprised her and made presents
with some silver dollars and a black dress. Grandma Thompson then
expressed the wish that she be buried at death in this dress. Her wish was
carried out. The funeral services were held in the Kelly school house, the
sermon being preached by Joseph Ford of the Baptist church. There was a
large turnout as the deceased had been a part of that section of Nemaha
county since its first settlement. Grandma Thompson was the mother of
the late Nick Thompson and also of Mrs. John H. Dennis with whom she
had made her home for years. They lived a happy life together and enjoyed
the visits of all the Kelly community who took a personal interest in their
welfare on account of the extreme age of Grandma Thompson. Her gransd-
son, John Thompson of Seneca, dug the grave for her burial in the Dennis
graveyard south of Seneca; dug it beside the remains of her husband who
was buried there thirty-six years ago. Both these dead parents now sleep
in Death’s valley side by side, awaiting the resurrection trumpet to call
them again into life. Grandma Thompson leaves other relatives besides
the daughter and grandson mentioned.

Notes: From 1991 “Jersey County History.”
Benjamin was converted in the earthquake revival of 1812. He was ordained
25 March 1825 and was the pastor of the old Bethel Baptist Church for 27
years. This was the church he was baptized in, ordained, licensed to preach
and which he served as a minister til his death.

Obituary of Benjamin Thompson:
Departed this life the 31st day of December 1853, Elder Banjamin Thompson
aged eighty years. He joined the Regular Baptist Church called Bethel near
Jacksom in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri on February 8, 1812. He was
licensed to preach in the Gospel on June 8, 1822, was ordained a minister of
the Gospel on March 12, 1826, and on September 9, 1826, was chosen
Pastor of said church and remained pastor of said church until the day of his
death. Elder Thompson as a preacher was sound in the faith that was
delivered to the saints. His life was an example to all people that knew
him. When at home he was engaged in working on his farm at peace with
all his neighbors, and when out preaching the word of mankind he freely
gave it for as much as it was given to him freely, so he made the Gospel
without a charge.
Believing with all his heart that it was his duty to preach wherever his mind
led him if any opportunity served and so he did all the time until his age and
weakness became so that he had to stay at his own dwelling where he was
kindly waited on until the messenger of death was prepared to separate his
spirit from his body. Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord, yea saith
the Spirit for they shall rest from their labor and their works to follow them.
He left a wife and one son and grandson on the farm and other children
scattered about with many brethren and neighbors and friends to mourn his
loss.
