1411 Wilson William Thompson, b. 17 Aug 1788, Hillsborough, Clear Creek, Woodford Co.,
Ky; d. 01 May 1866, Russiaville, Howard Co., IN. Married 24 May 1810, Licking River,
Campbell Co., KY, Mary “Polly” Grigg, b. 11 May 1789, Near Jackson, Cape Girardeau Co.,
MO. Daughter of Matthew and Ann “Nancy” (Gibson) Grigg. Wilson and Polly are both buried
at Russiaville Cemetery, row 24, Russiaville, Howard Co., IN. Wilson William was a Primitive
Baptist minister.
Obituary of Wilson William Thompson:
BROTHER BEEBE-it becomes my painful duty to inform you and the household
of faith, through your medium of correspondence, of the death of one of Zion’s
old and faithful watchmen, ELDER WILSON THOMPSON, who fell asleep in
Jesus May 1st, 1866. He was born August 17, 1788, in Kentucky, and at the early
age of thirteen was circumcised with the circumcision made without hands,
receiving the spirit of adoption, whereby he could cry, Abba, Father, and was
baptized by Elder James Lee. At the age of 22 he began his public career as a
Minister of the gospel, and for 56 years devotedly giving himself wholly to this
work of the ministry, as thousands who have sat under his ministry, growing
in grace and in the knowledge of the truth, can testify. A kidney disease
growing upon him seemed to impress his mind sensibly with approaching
death for some months, but with a remarkable constitution and strength of
lungs, and zeal unabated, he continued to preach Christ and him crucified,
until about one week before he died. His last labors were with the Antioch and
Ross Run churches, Wabash Co., Ind., where it pleased the good Lord to pour
out his spirit; additions were made to the church, and he seemed to almost
forget his infirmity, with the joy and praise that filled his soul on seeing the
Salvation of the Lord. He was taken down away from home, but by medical
assistance was partially relieved, to get to his son, James Thompson, in
Howard County. He spoke of his disease, his wordily affairs, and approaching
death with the utmost composure and resignation to the Lord’s will. His
physician expressed some surprise at his strong faith and confident assurance
in God, his Savior. He replied, “My God never changes.” About 18 hours
before he died, he aroused in severe convulsions, for about half an hour suffering
intensely. He cried out, “O, Lord, I pray, I pray,” and fell asleep, from which
no groan or sigh, or conscious suffering escaped till his breath left him. Truly
one of the mighty in Israel has fallen. He leaves a frail companion, nine months
younger than himself. May God support her in the sad hour till it is his will to
take her to his embrace. An appropriate discourse was delivered by Elder J. G.
Jackson from the words, “Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from
henceforth, yea, saith the spirit, for they rest from their labors, and their works
do follow them.” After which the remains were deposited in the graveyard at
Russiaville, Howard County, Indiana.

Born in Terre Haute, Don graduated from Gerstmeyer High School where his love of athletics
and desire for teaching originated. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1971, in company
with his life-long best friends Mike Lovellette and Jimmy Smith. He was stationed in Germany
until his departure from the military. Don graduated from Indiana State University with a bachelor’s
and master’s degrees in education. He began his illustrious teaching career with the North Vermillion
School Corporation, where he served as teacher, coach, athletic director, administrator, mentor, and
friend for 32 years. Don was honored to serve as the Falcon’s varsity baseball coach for many years;

Don delighted in so many things in his lifetime, including his dearest church, Eighth Avenue

Cardinals and relished in traveling with family and friends and volunteering for various
Organizations and events when requested. He thoroughly enjoyed visiting the local Baeslers
Market, and adored his numerous adopted pets, including his beloved Sheepdog, Whitney.
Long known for his witty sense of humor, positive outlook on life and infectious smile, Don
interacted with each new person as though they were a longtime friend. His uncanny ability
to lighten up a room with his encouraging words and open arms is something everyone will
recount in years to come. How blessed are we to have had something so special, it makes

Notes by Minnie Johnson Apple about 1935:
My father (Stephan R. Johnson) went to housekeeping in an old house,
Just one room. They used a big box for a table until father could make one.
Mother cooked on the fireplace instead of stove and their bed was made by
Boring holes in the logs of the house and pins put in them and a feather bed
24
Laid on them. Father’s mother left father about twenty acres of ground
Which he sold and bought over on the sand and moved on it. Then he sold
again, and bought what he always wanted. The Thomas place. Their
fourth child was born there. Then they sold that place and bought eighty
Acres on the Fairbanks and Curry township line half mile south of Vigo
County line in Sullivan County and they lived there until death. Now my

Review of Joseph Thompson-Greater Terre Haute and Vigo County-C.C. Oakey-1908-pp. 819-820.
Joseph Thompson is one of Prairie Creek Township’s most active business men,
25
prominently identified with its farming and milling interests, and his home is in
Middletown. For twenty-six years he has been actively connected with industrial
life, first operating a sawmill for eight years, during a similar period bought and
sold stock, shipping principally to Indianapolis, and since 1897 has been the
Proprietor of a flouring mill.
Mr. Thompson was born in Sullivan County, Indiana, May 19, 1849, a son of
Joseph Sr. and Nancy H. (Yeager) Thompson. For many years Joseph Thompson
Sr., was prominent in the business life of Sullivan County, following agricultural
pursuits, and his death occurred January 22, 1849, four months before the birth of
his son and namesake. Mrs. Thompson, born in 1815, survived her husband many
years and died in May 1900. She was but four years old when her parents came
to Terre Haute and she could recall to mind when that now populous city was a
little hamlet of four or five houses. After her husband’s death she carried on their
little farm of eighty acres and made a home for her children, nine in number,
namely: Clarissa, deceased; James, who married Julia Cuppy and resides in
Sullivan county; Eliza, the wife of John P. Harris, a retired farmer in Nebraska.
Henrietta, the wife of Stephan R. Johnson, a farmer in Sullivan County; William
who married Eliza McKinney and resided in Kansas; Nancy and Mary, both
deceased; Martha A., the wife of James H. Harris, of Nebraska, and Joseph
the subject of this review.
Joseph Thompson remained at home with his mother until his marriage and
afterward for three years she lived with him, her death occurring at his home.
Although in the meantime she had lived with her other children. In 1878,
three years after his marriage, he located on his farm of fifty-five acres in
Linton township, and he lived there until his removal to Middletown in 1898.
His farm now contains two-hundred acres, and since 1897 he has operated a
flouring mill in connection with his general farming, selling his product
principally at wholesale. He is also active in the public life of his community
voting with the Democratic party, and is a member of Lodge No. 476 and
the encampment of Odd Fellows. He has filled all the offices in his lodge
in Middletown and has three times been a representative to the grand lodge
at Indianapolis.
On the 11th of February 1875, Mr. Thompson was united in marriage to
Susan E. Gaskin, who was born May 1, 1854, a daughter of Stephen and
Luella Gaskin. Their seven children are: Oliver R., who died at the age of
thirteen months; Clement H., born March 3, 1878, married Early Ring and
lives in Middletown; Lula E., born April 19, 1882, is the wife of Joseph
Bailey of Linton township; John C., born August 12, 1882; Nola N., born
August 5, 1884, and Trillie Lester, born April 15, 1891, are all at home and
one, the third born, died in infancy.
Joseph Thompson and Susan Gaskin had:
14159A1 Oliver R. Thompson, b. 1875; d. aged 13 mo., 1876
14159A2 Clennie H. Thompson, b. 03 Mar 1878; d. 1941. Married Early Ring, b. 1865; d.1964.
14159A3 Infant, b. 1880; d. 1880.
14159A4 Lula Ellen Thompson, b. 19 Apr 1882; d. 1946. Married Joseph Bailey.
14159A5 John Carl Thompson, b. 12 Aug 1884, d. 01 Mar 1935. Married Osia Yeager,
b. 11 Jun 1890; d. 02 Feb 1913.
Notes: From a newspaper article-Looking Back at the Week Ahead….50 years ago:
The body of John Thompson was discovered lying face down on the banks
of a small stream about 1-1/4 mile east of Prairie Creek. John Patton and
Tom Sullivan, two area youths, discovered the body and reported it to the
Police.
26
Vigo County Coroner, Dr. R. C. VanArsdale, was called to the scene to
investigate.
According to information gathered by the investigating officers, Thompson
had gone to Prairie Creek about a week earlier and had not been seen or
heard from since. Thompson reportedly left the Prairie Creek pool room
with two other men, who had said they were going to come to Terre Haute.
Examination of Thompson’s body by the coroner revealed a deep cut on
the top of his head, a fractured skull and a broken neck.
VanArsdale said it would have been almost impossible for Thompson to
have sustained injuries in a fall. There were indications from the
investigating officers that Thompson was killed in another location and
his body placed by the stream.
Thompson’s hat was found lying near the body. Across the hat was a
bloody handkerchief. Although no money was found in his billfold,
Acquaintances expressed the fact Thompson had carried a large sum of
money on his person when he left his home.

Obituary of Eliza Yeager Thompson-Seneca Tribune, Seneca, Ks, Thurs. Oct 13, 1904:
A large funeral party came up from Kelly on Saturday to bury the remains
of Grandma Thompson, so long one of the favorite residents of that place.
She was the widow of the later John Thompson who died in 1868 at the
age of sixty-four years. Grandma Thompson would have been ninety-three
years old last Saturday had she lived but death called her one day before
her birthday. Three years ago, the friends and neighbors in Kelly surprised
her and made presents with silver dollars and a black dress. Grandma
Thompson then expressed the wish that she be buried at death in the
dress. Her wish was carried out. The funeral services were held in the
Kelly schoolhouse, the sermon being preached by Joseph Ford of the
Baptist church. There was a large turnout as the deceased had been a
part of that section of Nemaha County since its first settlement. Grandma
Thompson was the mother of the late Nick Thompson and to Mr. John
H. Dennis, with whom she had made her home for years. They lived a
happy life together and enjoyed the visits of all the Kelly community
who took a personal interest in their welfare on account of the extreme
age of Grandma Thompson. Her grandson, John Thompson of Seneca
dug the grave for her burial in the Dennis graveyard south of Seneca;
dug it beside the remains of her husband who was buried there thirtysix years ago. Both these dead parents now sleep in Death’s valley side
by side, awaiting the resurrection trumpet to call them again to life.
Grandma Thompson leaves other relatives besides the daughter and
grandson mentioned.

Obituary of Nancy Thompson Staggs:
Although my mind is greatly troubled and “tossed with tempests and not
comforted” I wish to inform you that it has pleased our Heavenly Father
to remove from me, by death, my dear companion-Mrs. Nancy Staggs.
She died on the 23 inst. In the 42nd of her age. She was confined on the
30
16th, and about 11 o’clock p.m. on the 23rd her eyes were closed in
death. I am left with 10 children to mourn our loss. We have lived
together 25 years.
Two prominent traits in her character were to sooth my sorrows and
check my vices, in mildness and moderation.
She never attached herself to any church, but she was a particular
friend to the Old School Baptist cause.
For years she cherished a little hope, but was afraid she might dishonor
the cause which she so highly esteemed if she would make a public
Profession of religion by joining the church.
She retained the full strength of her mind throughout her illness to the
last. Six hours before her demise, she called me to her bedside and
spoke of the purpose of God in bringing us into existence and taking
us out of this world, and remarked that it was all right, and that it was
our duty to submit to the sovereign will. She then related her travel
of mind, and sked what I thought of it.
She said she had always thought that when she came to this point,
she should find her mistake, but she said “that little hope is now so
enlarged that it braces me on every side. I have nothing to fear”.
She then called her children and gave each one of them her farewell
address, according to their capacity. She then again addressed me
and said, “Our parting is attended with some sorrow, but it is the will
of him who doeth all things right, and I know that we shall have a
joyful meeting in the mansions of eternal day, and that will more
than recompense all our sufferings here.”
While conversing with as much composure as she ever did, her
countenance flushed suddenly with an unwonted beauty and she
inquired if we heard that beautiful singing? Being told that we
did not, she said it was in the mansions above, and continued to
converse about it in as great an ecstasy of joy as any human being
could express, about 10 minutes, then she said it had stopped-she
could no longer hear it.
She was a daughter of Nicholas and Rebecca Thompson and sister
of Elder Wilson Thompson of Indiana.
There has been a strange fatality among the heads of families in our
land for almost two months. Heads of families have been falling
on every hand and the moans of orphans is heard all around us.
Twenty-nine children of my nearest neighbors are left fatherless
or motherless within the last month.
Your brother in hope of immortality,
Elijah Staggs

Benjamin was converted in the earthquake revival of 1812. He was ordained
25 March 1825 and was the pastor of the old Bethel Baptist Church for 27 years.
This was the church he was baptized in, ordained, licensed to preach and which
he served as a minister until his death.
Obituary of Benjamin Thompson:
Departed this life the 31st day of December 1853, Elder Benjamin Thompson,
aged eighty years. He joined the Regular Baptist Church called Bethel near
Jackson in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri on February 8, 1812. He was
licensed to preach the Gospel on June 8, 1822, was ordained a minister of
the Gospel on March 12, 1826, and on September 9, 1826, was chosen
Pastor of said church and remained pastor of said church until the day of
his death. Elder Thompson as a preacher was sound in the faith that was
delivered to the saints. His life was an example to all people that knew
him. When at home he was engaged in working on his farm at peace
with all his neighbors, and when out preaching the word of mankind he
freely gave it for as much as it was given to him freely, so he made the
Gospel without a charge.
Believing with all his heart that it was his duty to preach wherever his
mind led him if any opportunity served and so he did all the time until
his age and weakness became to that he had to stay at his own dwelling
where he was kindly waited on until the messenger of death was prepared
to separate his spirit from his body. Blessed are the dead that die in the
Lord, yea saith the Spirit for they shall rest from their labor and their
works to follow them. He left a wife and one son and grandson on the
farm and other children scattered about with many brethren and neighbors
and friends to mourn his loss.
