126 James Albert Ryan (b. 23 Jul 1886 – d. 20 Feb 1951) Born in __, Albert was a carpenter and later I, Donald Lee May, remember he ran a combination restaurant, gas station, and motel. After that I remember he ran another gas station, I believe, in Rockport, Indiana. Albert’s second wife, Virgia Catherine Jeffery (spelled Jeffrey’s on a township map around Grandview, Indiana. Also spelled “Jefferie” in some research done by Mrs. Virgil Hulsey, Carol Stevens. Carol was the granddaughter of Albert and Virgia. Albert and Virgie built a home on Jeffery land just north of Grandview, Indiana. Sometime in the 1950’s they had electricity installed and a hand pump installed inside to draw water from the cistern outside at the corner of the house. Before that, water was “fetched” from the cistern by a bucket with a rope tied to it. They had a wood stove to cook on and a pot belly coal stove in the living room to heat the entire four room house. They slept on feather beds for as long as I can remember. They never had an indoor toilet. Their house was located about 1/8 down a narrow lane of clay dirt. During grainy seasons cars had to be left at the gravel road and we walked to the house. This was a primitive lifestyle for that time. Most other people had electricity and indoor plumbing. Albert James Ryan is buried in New Hope Cemetery at Newtonville, Indiana. Virgia wanted him buried at Highland Cemetery, which was a short walk from Albert and Vigia’s house, but the dirt roads were so bad that year that they could not get the hearse to it. The roads were bad at New Hope also, but Albert’s son in law, Earl Stevens, was able to pull the hearse with his wrecker to and from the grave site. James Albert’s name is written as Albert Ryan on many documents. He went by Albert. His given name is James Albert as shown on his death certificate, WWI draft card and marriage certificate.

1261 Thelma Louise Ryan (b. 22 Jun 1908 – 16 Aug 1960). Born in Oklahoma. Her mother, Ada Clark died when Thelma was around six years old. She and her brother, Virgil Ryan were raised by Albert and his 2nd wife Virgia Jeffrey. Thelma married Herbert Leslie May (b. 26 Jul 1909 – d. ca 1957) in Chrisney, Indiana. Herbert was born in Grandview, Indiana, the son of George Washington may and Adelia Gudgen. Herbert left the farm he was raised on and got a job in Booneville, Indiana. Thelma and her husband moved several times due to his job. They lived for a time in Indiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Washington State and spent several years in Terre Haute, Indiana. At his job in Richland, Washington he was employed by the company that made the world’s first Atomic Bomb. They moved to a Chicago suburb where Thelma died. She suffered most of her adult life with Limb Girdle type 1D muscular dystrophy. This type was not diagnosed at the time. All her children inherited the disease from their mother. (Note: the type of muscular dystrophy was not diagnosed by DNA until I, Linda Lee May, was typed by Emory Genetics in 2016 at a conference in Atlanta, Georgia. See more under Linda Lee May) Thelma was a housewife and mother of three children. Thelma died in Villa Park, Illinois and was buried on 20 Aug 1960 in Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery in the Garden of Victory; Lot 181-D GR. 1-2 on Roosevelt Road at Route 63 in Elmhurst, Illinois 60126.

Note: For this record, the name of James Albert Ryan’s second wife ‘s name will be spelled using Jeffery. There seems to be three spellings either used or simply misspelled Jeffery was the spelling used in the published obituary of Naomi Baden, Virgia’s grandmother. James Albert and Virgia Catherine Jeffery were married at Evansville, Indiana. Virgia Catherine Jeffery was the daughter of William H Jeffery (b. 1860 – d. 1933) and Tina Catherine Banks (b. Oct 1863 – d. 1952), of Spencer County, Hammond Township, Indiana. Virgia was probably born in Spencer County, Indiana because a township map of the area around Grandview, Indiana shows two different plots owned by Jeffrey’s. The Evansville, Indiana city directory shows them living in Evansville and that Albert worked at Hercules Buggy Factory as a wood worker. A granddaughter, Mrs. Virgil (1612) Virginia Carol Stevens) Hulsey says Virgia told her that Albert and Virgia worked at a motel called The Chateau at the intersection of Morgan Avenue and U. S. 41. Albert ran the gas station and Virgia cleaned the rooms. William H. Jeffrey (b. 1860 – d. 1933) and Tina Catherine Banks (b. Oct 1863 – d. 1952) sold, in 1924, a plot of land, for one dollar, with love, with love to Albert and Virgia in Spencer County, Indiana. Virgia and Albert build a house on the plot and it was theirs until they sold it in 1964. Virgia lived with Albert and was always busy. She kept house, raised 5 children, raised chickens, planted, and harvested a large garden. After harvesting, she shucked, sapped, dug, and picked her produce and canned it all for the coming winter. She washed her clothes on a wash board until they got a gasoline powered agitator washing machine. She carried spring water about 100 yards.
To use for washing her clothes because she said it was better than cistern water. During the winter she made quilts and other things. I (Donald Lee May) received one of her quilts for a wedding present. I think she made quilts for other weddings also. She stayed on after Albert died until she could not do things on her own anymore. She spent her last years with her children in Evansville, Indiana where she died in 1970. Virgia is buried in New Hope Cemetery in Newtonville, Indiana with her husband (16 James Albert Ryan.
1263 Lillian Katherine Ryan (b. 5 Sep 1917 – d. 27 Apr 1985). Lillian graduated from Grandview High School in 1936. “Lill” is buried in New Hope Cemetery in Newtonville, Indiana. She married (21 Jul 1936) Earl Deweese (Pete) Stevens (28 Aug 1915 – d. 1 May 1980). Earl is buried in New Hope Cemetery In Newtonville, Indiana. Earl was the son of Thomas Milton Stevens and Lola Mae Stevens. Lil and Earl were married in Grandview, Indiana by Thomas Milton Stevens, Earl’s father, and a justice of the peace for Spencer County, Indiana. Lill and Earl had two children, Jimmy and Carol, before Earl was drafted into the Army. Earl served in the U.S. Army serial number 35244502 during WWII. He entered the service at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on March 7th, 1944. He took 16 weeks of basic training and then he was transferred to England. Tow months later he landed on a beach I Normandy about after “D-Day”. In France he was in combat 128 days. He was attached to the 1st Army, 99th Infantry Division, 395 Regiment, 3rd Platoon, Company K, 1stScout as a Private First Class. He was wounded near Liege, Belgium in the “Battle of the Bulge” near the Ardennes Forrest. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was in the hospital in England and the United States until he was given a medical discharge on July 18, 1945 from Foster General Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. While Earl was away in the army, Lill worked at Republic Aircraft in Evansville, now called Whirlpool, as a riveter assembling airplanes for the war. At the time it was unusual for women to work in factories, but able-bodied men were scarce because more of the were called into military services to fight for their country. women, like Lill, went to work in factories doing what, heretofore, was “men’s work”. It was at this tie that someone invented the phrase, “Rosy the Riveter” and it stuck. It applied to almost all women who worked in factories for the war effort. His total disappearance is still a mystery. My father, Donald Lee May, placed an ad in the newspaper in Pistoia, but he received no response.
